Life is multi-dimensional.

Craig Kelpin is a Canadian artist based in Vancouver. Craig`s work follows multiple arcs.

His theme based 3D mixed media art seeks to uncover and discover the beauty and texture of everyday items from a new perspective. Starting with deconstruction and discovery, he builds with form and flow enhanced with pattern, colour and texture. Surfaces of wood, metal and plastic are built upon with paint, hardware and found objects and quite often literally leap off the panel.

“I love discovering a new way to see the beauty of a physical object. We grow up looking at something like a piano but only see the wood case and some black and white keys. But a different beauty lay within. Fabricated wood pieces that work together with springs and wires; beautiful hand painted cast iron inner frames; hard copper wires and soft, coloured felt pads all create the visual music inside. I strive to reveal these elements in a new way that allows the pieces to still work together in a fresh repurposed way.”

Craig`s other work employs both bold and intense colour and also stark contrasts. The paint flows around the panel, simultaneously creating a directional tug-of-war yet a pleasing symmetry. The layering of painted elements, some recognizable like trees, and some not, give his work texture and depth.

“The movement of paint fascinates me. I can push it or pull it. I can blend it together or lay it down side by side. I can mix colours for my vision but I`m regularly surprised by the new shades that form as I work the paint. I`m always experimenting with different products, additives and different applications that give a new texture to the paints surface and the final look of the art work.”
